Colorists: Having Difficulty Finding A Skintone? This happens to me all the time.
I'm starting out an image, and for the life of me, I just cannot determine what color I should use for the skintone. I wish I had a crystal ball that would show me thirty minutes into the future so I can see just how a character will look after applying all the necessary shading, anatomical detailing, and highlights based upon the base color I use. A lot of times, it'll appear too faint, too desaturated, or on the flip side, way too bold and gleaming like a bronzed deity caked in a thick lathering of walrus grease.
Which is delicious, by the way.
FORTUNATELY! The folks at The Humanae Tumblr seemed to have a crystal ball of their own. Not so much one that shows the final product of my work, but one that certainly told them of my many incredibly frustrating endeavors into spending a good chunk of time shading a character's skin only to realize the base tone was absolute g

a moment to talk about art and copying styleswell maybe i'll sound elitest, but ive always been a fan of the idea; draw how you draw, dont look too closely at others work and dont worry too much about finding your "style". it comes on its own but if you're looking at others work too closely to learn you're only learning somebody elses path in the road of art and not your own
I did look at others work to get inspired as i started out, but mostly i looked at photographs while i worked, not art. i was given a bit of advice like 8 years ago, and ive always held it pretty high up on things to remember, and i share it often.
when you're learning how to draw/paint, you should look at LIFE. figure study classes if you can, photos if you cannot. in other words, paint a river by sitting next to it, not by looking at another artists painting of it.
EDIT: yes there is something to learn and digest with looking at others works. but when you start your own art, put down theirs!
learning how to draw by looking at other peoples work ends in s

Common Art Theft ExcusesTop Excuses I Hear from Thieves and Rule Breakers
1.EVERY1 DOSE IT!!!!!111!!!
This one is never well written... Just because other people do it doesn't make it okay. If it's against the rules I will report it. I don't care who you are or who else is doing it. If you give me examples I'll report them to. After all, if crazy people started shooting other people in the face would you start doing it too? Apparently koaumae5918 has seen "Well everyone steals! We're stealing the alphabet!" I've seen this one as well...No. No it doesn't work that way stupid.
2. UR STOOPID. UR A TROLL.
This one isn't an excuse, but I hear it a lot. It's never well written either... Me or anyone else reporting you doesn't make us trolls. We aren't harassing you. We're trying to show you what you've done wrong so you don't get banned, suspended, or reprimanded.
3. You aren't a mod! You can't report me!
