Winter dream in forest... by JPGphotos
small thoughti used to try and get cover work at zenescope. in fact the first time i got one, i did it all in photoshop and worked it to death....
well, about a week later i was asked to color the same cover by a different artist. ouch yeah? i was so totally bad ass and better than mine though, of that there was no doubt. so i did it, and it remained one of my favorite covers id painted digitally for a very long time.
now, for long while after that i would do something sketchy and fix it in photoshop. i never paid much attention to my lines, because i could just fix it up in photoshop, be it line quality or anatomy.
then i decided to start paying attention to my lines, so actually try to make something i could keep the lines on.
and you guys have all seen, just in this one year what has happened as a result.
my point here is yes, there can be some great convenient speed saving shortcuts in digital art, but if you find your progress slowing, consider putting photoshop down for awhile.
a moment to talk about art and copying styleswell maybe i'll sound elitest, but ive always been a fan of the idea; draw how you draw, dont look too closely at others work and dont worry too much about finding your "style". it comes on its own but if you're looking at others work too closely to learn you're only learning somebody elses path in the road of art and not your own
I did look at others work to get inspired as i started out, but mostly i looked at photographs while i worked, not art. i was given a bit of advice like 8 years ago, and ive always held it pretty high up on things to remember, and i share it often.
when you're learning how to draw/paint, you should look at LIFE. figure study classes if you can, photos if you cannot. in other words, paint a river by sitting next to it, not by looking at another artists painting of it.
EDIT: yes there is something to learn and digest with looking at others works. but when you start your own art, put down theirs!
learning how to draw by looking at other peoples work ends in s
Colorists: Having Difficulty Finding A Skintone? This happens to me all the time.
I'm starting out an image, and for the life of me, I just cannot determine what color I should use for the skintone. I wish I had a crystal ball that would show me thirty minutes into the future so I can see just how a character will look after applying all the necessary shading, anatomical detailing, and highlights based upon the base color I use. A lot of times, it'll appear too faint, too desaturated, or on the flip side, way too bold and gleaming like a bronzed deity caked in a thick lathering of walrus grease.
Which is delicious, by the way.
FORTUNATELY! The folks at The Humanae Tumblr seemed to have a crystal ball of their own. Not so much one that shows the final product of my work, but one that certainly told them of my many incredibly frustrating endeavors into spending a good chunk of time shading a character's skin only to realize the base tone was absolute g

My life becomes more weird everyday. After months of routine strange things can happen, and of course they tend to appear gregariously. My typical day includes early waking up, few hours of work, three hours spent at a gym and then lonely evenings on deviantART or facebook, or other mystical places on the internet. I don't go out, I don't talk to people. I am closed person, I prefer to take photos or write my book, so I don't have any friends. All of my acquaintances ended when I returned to my hometown after finishing studies. I don't even have proper opportunity to meet some nice representatives of opposite sex. So every day I get up I tell myself something like: "Rise and shine, sweetheart! The day won't become shitty on its own!"
So, when strange things happen I am quite a bit... unbalanced.
Lately strange things have happened. Yes, in plural.
First of all - I will appear on TV. I can't say more now, but the one thing I can say is that I would really like t
